When a doctor also has a passion for business, there can be only one solution – open his own medical business. Dr. Vijay Gandla, program director of Hospitalist and chair of the Department of General Internal Medicine at High Point Regional Health System, decided to do just that.
He recently purchased Magnolia Day Spa in Jamestown and has been revamping some of its services to cover medical procedures. The new business will be known as Magnolia Medical Spa Skin Care and Weight Loss Center.
Gandla had been looking for a business opportunity when he found Magnolia Day Spa for sale on Craigslist.
“I liked the idea of taking the day spa and changing it to a medical spa,” he said.
Gandla brings with him an entirely new staff, many he knows from his work at High Point Regional. Besides Gandla, who will be on the premises more than half of the time and oversee all other treatments, employees include Dana Skeen, esthetician; Jodie Burge-Pugh, massage therapist; Jessica Smith, nail technician; and Amanda Sprouse, manager. There also will be several independent contractors.
“We will continue to offer a certain amount of fluff and puff,” Sprouse said with a smile. “But when people come here, they will actually be able to see a physician. This will be a rehabilitative spa. We are very much into result-driven treatment.”
Services available include pedicures and manicures. A free consultation will be given with each skin-care treatment, which is designed to fit an individual’s specific needs. There is also a full line of waxing treatments and massages for relaxation as well as therapy.
Medical spa services include a glycolic smoothing facial, Zyme peel and microdermabrasion, as well as B-12 shots, botox, restylane, juvederm, mole and skin tag removal, vein treatments and lipo dissolve.
“We also will offer HCG, a medically managed weight loss program,” Gandla said.
The spa will carry a line of pharmaceutical nutritional supplements and pharmaceutical- based cosmetics that must be prescribed by a physician.
Gandla believes the Jamestown area is the perfect place for his business.
“You can find some medical spas in Greensboro and High Point, but none that have a physician on site as much as we do,” Sprouse said. “That helps set us apart.”
To launch their skin-care treatment and weight loss program, the staff at Magnolia Medical Spa is hosting a Nurses Night at the Magnolia on May 31 and June 9 for nurses and staff members from High Point Regional Hospital. Skeen and Gandla will provide discounted treatments.
The community is invited to stop by the spa at 209 W. Main Street, check its website at www.magnoliamedicalspa.com, or call 887-7140 to learn more about all the services.
